How Much Movers Cost in Houston

What Houston Movers Charge Per Hour
Ring around Houston for quotes on a local move and you will hear anything from about $75 to $150 an hour for two movers, which tells you almost nothing. The reason the spread is that wide is that most of those numbers are missing a piece: a trip or travel fee, usually $75 to $100, that gets added once the job is done. Put that against a quote of $115 an hour with a $99 fee bolted on. Three hours there bills out at $444. Three hours here is $387. The advertised rate was lower and the bill was still higher. So ask every mover you call one question: is your trip fee in the rate, or added at the end.
What a Move Actually Comes To
You are not really trying to learn an hourly rate, you are trying to find out what lands on the card at the end. Because the fee is already inside the rate, the total is just hours multiplied by the crew rate, so you can work it out yourself before you ever call. Here is every common job length, done for you.

A bigger crew is not automatically a bigger bill. Three movers cost more per hour and finish sooner, so on a house with real furniture in it the three person crew often lands under the two person one. Truck, Labor Only, or Full Service
Most people think the decision is movers or no movers, and it is not. There are three ways to do this, and the middle one rarely gets mentioned on the phone. All that separates them is who drives and who lifts.

Labor only gets recommended here more than you would expect from a moving company. When a container is already parked outside, paying us to bring a second truck to it helps nobody. Ask for labor only by name and the job gets priced that way.
What Makes a Move Take Longer
You can have the same floor plan as your neighbour and still pay four hours more than they did, and it is almost never about the furniture. It is the path between the door and the truck, and how much work is still waiting when the crew walks in. These five drive the hours more than anything else.
- Stairs and floor level. Every item goes up or down by hand, one trip at a time. A third floor walkup can add hours to a load that would be quick at ground level.
- How far the truck parks from the door. A long carry across a lot or down a driveway multiplies into every single trip. Reserving the closest spot the morning of is worth real money.
- Whether your boxes are actually packed. If the kitchen is still in the cabinets when we arrive, the crew packs it on the clock, which is billed the same as booking packing services up front. Sealed and labeled boxes waiting by the door is the biggest hour saver on this list.
- Furniture that needs breaking down. Bed frames, sectionals, cribs, treadmills and wall mounted televisions all come apart and go back together, and both ends are billable time.
- Elevator buildings. A shared elevator sets the pace no matter how fast the crew is. Buildings that let you reserve a service lift for a window are much quicker.
How a Moving Day Runs
Most people have no idea what they are buying by the hour, which makes the bill feel arbitrary. A local move has four parts and the clock runs through all of them, from the moment the crew starts protecting your floors to the moment the last box is in a room. Knowing the shape of it tells you where your own prep actually helps.
- Walkthrough and protection. Roughly the first fifteen to thirty minutes. Floor runners, door jamb padding, a walk of both ends so nothing is a surprise.
- Wrap and load. The longest stretch. Furniture gets pad wrapped and shrink wrapped, disassembly happens here, and the truck is loaded to ride safely.
- Drive. Billed, because the crew and truck are working. This is why the time of day you book matters more in Houston than the mileage does.
- Unload and place. Boxes go to the room on the label, furniture goes back together, and we do a final walk with you before the clock stops.
Two numbers bound the day. Your clock starts when the crew arrives rather than when they leave the yard, and it stops once the last item is placed and you have signed off. The two hour minimum sits underneath that, so a job wrapping up in ninety minutes still bills two hours. Nothing is added after that, because the trip fee was already in the rate and the ceiling you agreed to is the most the job can come to. When You Should Not Hire Movers
Sometimes the right answer is to keep your money, and you should hear that from a moving company rather than find it out afterwards. Say you are shifting a studio or a single room, you have a friend or two, and nothing in it is heavy or breakable. A rental truck and a Saturday will beat any crew on price. That is simply a smaller job than a minimum charge is designed for.
Four things flip it the other way. Stairs. Something heavy or irreplaceable, like a piano or a gun safe. A date fixed by a lease or a closing. Or simply not wanting to drive a truck through Houston traffic. Any one of those and a crew earns its rate, because that is where doing it yourself starts costing more than it saves.
In between the two sits labor only. You rent and drive the truck, we load and unload it, and the heavy part is done by people who do it daily. If the two ends of your move are weeks apart, moving and storage is the version that holds your things in between. How Far in Advance to Book Movers in Houston
If your date is already fixed by a lease or a closing, the risk is not price, it is availability. Two to three weeks out is comfortable for a local move. The trap is the last weekend of the month, which fills first because that is when leases turn over, and the May through September stretch when the whole city moves at once.
Short notice is not a penalty here. Same day and next day jobs run at the same hourly rate as anything booked a month out, and evenings and weekends carry no surcharge. The only limit is whether a crew and a truck are free.
What to Check in a Moving Company Contract
You will be handed paperwork on move morning with a truck already in the driveway, and that is where a cheap quote quietly turns into an expensive day. Four lines decide what you actually owe and what happens if something breaks. Read those four before anything else.
- Is the trip or travel fee inside the rate or added at the end? This alone can swing a short job by a hundred dollars.
- Is the estimate binding, not to exceed, or neither? Ours is a written ceiling, which means the number cannot climb past it even if the day runs long.
- What does the valuation coverage actually pay? Basic coverage is settled by weight, not by what the item cost you. Ask what the per pound figure is before you assume you are covered.
